What is a septic baffle?

septic tank pumping Northville
What is a septic  baffle? Before we can answer this properly, we need to describe what the inside of your septic tank should look like if it’s in working order. Your septic tank should have three separate layers: a scum layer on top, a relatively clear water in the middle, and a sludge layer at the bottom. If any of these layers aren’t present, we must determine the cause. Most often, one of the septic tank baffles is missing or damaged and in need of repair.

Baffles are needed for your septic tank to perform properly. Raw sewage from your home is directed by the baffle downward into the middle zone of the septic tank. This means the effluent follows a tortuous path through the tank, which provides the necessary detention time for the larger solids to settle out.

What’s the Function of a Septic Tank Baffle?

septic tank pumping Northville
You may be baffled when it comes to properly maintaining your septic system. Our goal is to make sure you’re as educated as possible about your septic tank.

The outlet baffle keeps solids on the surface from entering the septic field.  It's a pipe that aims downward into your tank allowing mostly water flowing into the field.

What factors into the cost of septic tank pumping?

septic tank pumping Northville

There are a few factors that influence the cost including:

1.     Lid Accessibility – Are they dug up or is the lid at the surface? Risers can be installed to improve the accessibility of your lid.

2.     Size of your tank – smaller systems cost as little as $350, while a 2,000-gallon septic tank could cost you $700 or more.

3.     Usage – High usage tanks will need to be pumped more frequently to prevent back-ups. If you use a lot of water, or put food down a garbage disposal, your system will need more maintenance.

4.     Location – The accessibility and complexity of navigating your tank can vary widely depending on if you live in a rural or urban area.

5.     Frequency – If you’re not keeping up with a routine maintenance schedule, solids can build up until your tank’s holing capacity is diminished, resulting in a clog.

Maintain Your Septic System with Septic Tank Pumping in Northville

Septic Tank Pumping Northville, MI

One thing all septic systems have in common is requiring regular maintenance to perform efficiently. Septic maintenance includes inspecting the entire system every 1-3 years and pumping the tank every 2-3 years. The frequency for pumping your septic tank depends on the tank size, number of people in your household, the water habits and use, if a garbage disposal is used, and the number of solids accumulated in the tank. A rule of thumb is to pump the tank when the solids are two-thirds of the volume in the tank.

If you’ve never pumped your septic tank, learn more about how that can cause issues later on here.

Which Septic System is Best for Your Home?

Did you know that there’s more than one type of septic system?

septic tank pumping Northville, MI

Did you know your lot size, house needs, and surrounding area all affect your septic needs?

Your septic system can vary depending on a few factors. These systems are just a few of your options:

The Septic Tank: A buried watertight tank designated and constructed to receive and partially treat raw domestic sanitary wastewater.

Conventional System: A septic tank and a trench or bed subsurface wastewater infiltration system, the drain field.

Chamber System: serves as an alternative design to the gravel and stone drain field systems. The main advantage of the chamber system is the increased ease of delivery and construction

If you smell a foul odor coming from your septic system, does that mean your system is failing?

Septic Tank Pumping South Lyon

There may be several reasons for the smell, which can occur inside or outside your home. If you notice an odor, it may be coming from a roof vent or other vent pipe that allows the system pressure to equalize. This is a normal part of your system. Sometimes these vents can become obstructed and clogged (from leaves, debris, etc.) or the vent pipe can freeze during prolonged cold spells. These situations could cause an odor inside or outside of your home. Another possibility is a down draft (changes to wind pattern) or other location-specific conditions, which can create an odor inside or outside your home. In these cases, the vent may need to be cleaned or raised. There are charcoal filters available for roof vents that may also alleviate the odors.

Find out if your septic system is failing by reading more here.

What Are Signs of Damage?

septic tank pumping South Lyon, MI

Most septic tanks are not damaged by flooding since they are below ground and completely covered. However, septic tanks and pump chambers can fill with silt and debris, and must be professionally cleaned if your system isn’t accepting water. If the soil absorption field is clogged with silt, a new system may have to be installed.

What to Do with Your Septic System After a Flood?

septic tank pumping South Lyon MI

Septic Tank Pumping South Lyon MI

  • The float that activates the alarm could be bad.
  • The line between the pump and the field could be broken. Your septic company can check the line for you and replace it if needed.

What You Need to Know About Servicing Your Septic Tank

septic tank pumping South Lyon, MI

After being shut in all winter, what’s on your to-do list? Don’t forget to add servicing your septic tank to the list!

At every pump out, your professional septic tank cleaner should:

  • Pump it out
  • Check for cracks or leaks
  • Watch for back flow from the field
  • Make sure the line from tank to house is clear by running water through it
  • Check for a septic baffle: if none is present it should be installed
  • Clean the septic filter if one is present
  • Install a riser to the surface if none exists

The above checklist focuses on the tank, but tells you very little about your drain field. Make sure your tank is properly maintained to lengthen the life of your drain field.
