What You Need to Know About Servicing Your Septic Tank

septic tank pumping South Lyon, MI

After being shut in all winter, what’s on your to-do list? Don’t forget to add servicing your septic tank to the list!

At every pump out, your professional septic tank cleaner should:

  • Pump it out
  • Check for cracks or leaks
  • Watch for back flow from the field
  • Make sure the line from tank to house is clear by running water through it
  • Check for a septic baffle: if none is present it should be installed
  • Clean the septic filter if one is present
  • Install a riser to the surface if none exists

The above checklist focuses on the tank, but tells you very little about your drain field. Make sure your tank is properly maintained to lengthen the life of your drain field.

Can Septic Systems Be Pumped During the Winter?

septic tank pumping South Lyon

Below 30 degrees it gets tougher as the material can freeze in the hose during the process. The hose provides a lot of cold surface area to promote freezing. Secondly, the valves on the truck can freeze. The valves are very precise with very close tolerances to prevent leaking. It only takes a drop or two of water to freeze the valves, then they won’t function.

Garbage Disposals & Septic Systems Don’t Mix

septic tank pumping South Lyon MI

Do you have a garbage disposal?

Are you cautious what you put into it?

If you’re on a septic system, you should learn the do’s and don’ts of using your garbage disposal.

If you use your disposal often and put a lot of food waste into it, you’ll need to have your septic tank pumped more frequently to keep it running at maximum efficiency.

According to the EPA, “food waste usually is slowly digested by the healthy bacteria in your septic tank and can accumulate as scum and sludge. If a large amount of water enters the septic tank or the tank fills up with solids, it can push the solids into the drainfield, causing the pipes to clog and increasing the thickness of the biomat (a bacteria layer that forms on the bottom and sides of the drainfield trenches). If you must use a garbage disposal unit, your tank will need to be pumped more frequently.”
